Calgary Gay Cruising Areas
LGBTQ Life in YYC | Avenue Calgary
If you've been pining for the great outdoors, this is the place for you. While you are here, you might even want to visit some of the locations where they shot. As far as a real-life gay scene, Calgary has that, too. This eclectic city offers a fun mix of gay bars and has a few big dance clubs and music venues. The restaurant scene is bustling and there are many options of gay-friendly places to dine.
LGBTQ Life in YYC
Last December, my sister-in-law came to Calgary for Christmas and was feeling stressed about the high cost of living on the West Coast. Many longtime Calgarians have seen friends and family members leave for the greener pastures of Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver, especially in the s when discrimination was more overt and the community was struggling in the wake of the AIDS crisis. If the city is to continue to grow into the cultural centre most Calgarians want it to be, we need to be welcoming to all kinds of people and leave that redneck reputation behind for good.
Unless you knew it was there, you might walk by an unassuming two story building without realizing it is a popular gay lounge. The Backlot, with its entrance along the side of the building, has a nice quiet outdoor patio for the summer months, fireplace in the winter and a pool table on the second floor. My former partners Rudy, Lorne and myself wanted to open up a lounge. We found the spot and went from there. It is primarily regulars who come here.
