Jake Barrett, 22, from Rushton, Northamptonshire, was left with a grape-sized sac of peroxide bleach under his tongue after he suffered a rare reaction to the Crest 1hr Express Strips. The chemical compound is found in several whitening treatments, including bleach and disinfectants, as well as being used to make homemade explosives. Hydrogen peroxide is found to have made up 15 per cent of the Crest strips used by Mr Barrett.

Medics were forced to remove the pulsating sac of bleach, which was the size of a grape, to save Mr Barrett's life. The sac of bleach was so delicate that it could have burst at any moment and leaked deadly hydrogen peroxide down Mr Barrett's throat.
